Wise Words was written as a retire­ment gift for Bob Hurwitz, longtime pres­i­dent of Nonesuch Records, as part of a suite of pieces for the “amateur” pianist by Philip Glass, Donnacha Dennehy, John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, Brad Mehldau, Nico Muhly, and Pat Metheny. 

The piece is a short étude on that one really tricky broken-10^th passage from Beethoven’s sonata Op. 90.
