Parting Friends

Parting Friends was written for pianist Lara Downes, at her sugges­tion to write a short piano piece based on an early American tune. I turned to one of my favorite Sacred Harp songs, Parting Friends (267), arrang­ing it over a gentle ostinato, which becomes a downward sequence, and in the second verse, a mensu­ra­tion canon. Distant frag­ments of Thomas Tertius Noble’s hymn tune Come, Labor On appear over simpler coun­ter­point in the coda.
