Note
“House Work” in the sense of the “house wine”—not something rare and expensive, but rather, the right thing at the right time. In this case: a brief theme and variations for the Pogossian family, who happen to comprise a clarinet quintet. The lyrical theme is initially heard unadorned, passed between the musicians in fragments. Over the course of four variations ranging from frenetic to static, it is subjected to a variety of harmonic and contrapuntal transformations, anchored by a stately pavane at the end.
