At Elise Frawley’s sugges­tion, I wrote her a piece that has to do with song forms. Every­body Has a Sad Secret is a ballad which proceeds in alter­nat­ing verses. A strummed accom­pa­ni­ment under­scores bursts of melody, heard each time with slightly differ­ent inflec­tions, as if the lyrics had changed. The music is in an intimate, confes­sional mode without histrionics.
